The Federal Government has released its official schedule of activities for the 2025 Democracy Day celebrations, with a public lecture slated for June 11 as one of the key events.
This announcement was made in a statement by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), on Thursday in Abuja.
Inter-Ministerial Committee Established
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) tasked with organizing "a memorable and befitting Democracy Day Anniversary" for 2025.
At the inaugural meeting, Akume, represented by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, emphasized the significance of Democracy Day as an opportunity to honor Nigeria's democratic journey.
"This year's Democracy Day Celebration is an opportunity to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of our founding fathers to attain independence for our dear nation and to retrospect on the daunting challenges and trauma that other democratic champions faced in their collective efforts to wrest power from the grip of military dictatorship," Akume stated.

Committee Composition
The Inter-Ministerial Committee is chaired by the SGF, with Nadungu Gagare, Permanent Secretary for Political and Economic Affairs Office of the OSGF, serving as Secretary.
Other committee members include key government officials such as Wale Edun (Minister of Finance), Mohammed Idris Malagi (Minister of Information), Abubakar Atiku Bagudu (Minister of Budget and Economic Planning), Yusuf Tuggar (Minister of Foreign Affairs), Nyesom Wike (Minister of FCT), and Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo (Minister of Interior).
Security representatives on the committee include Kayode Egbetokun (Inspector General of Police), Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi (Director General, Department of State Services), and Brigadier General Adebisi Onasanya (Commander, Guards Brigade).
Committee's Mandate
According to the statement, the committee's terms of reference include planning and executing all approved Democracy Day activities, co-opting relevant organizations or persons as needed, documenting all celebration activities for posterity, and handling any other assignments necessary for successful implementation.
The annual Democracy Day celebration commemorates Nigeria's return to democratic governance and honors those who fought for the country's democratic dispensation.
