President Bola Tinubu has conferred the prestigious national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates. The ceremony took place in Lagos on Tuesday as part of Gates' ongoing visit to Nigeria.
The award presentation was witnessed by several dignitaries, including Africa's richest man and founder of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, who attended the ceremony alongside other notable figures.
Gates' Mission in Nigeria
Gates, who serves as chairman of the Gates Foundation, is in Nigeria to engage with federal and state leaders on strengthening the country's primary healthcare system. His visit includes meetings with President Tinubu and other government officials to discuss healthcare reforms and development initiatives.
According to a statement from the Gates Foundation, the philanthropist will also participate in a Goalkeepers Nigeria event focused on Africa's innovation future. Additionally, he plans to hold discussions with local scientists and partners contributing to Nigeria's national strategy on artificial intelligence and health solutions.
Expanding African Presence
The Foundation highlighted that its recent opening of offices in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and Senegal, alongside its first African office established in Ethiopia over a decade ago, demonstrates its commitment to deepening partnerships across the continent.
Gates' visit follows a significant announcement made by the Foundation on May 8, pledging to invest $200 billion over the next 20 years to advance global health and development. This investment is part of Gates' personal commitment to donate "virtually all of his wealth" to the Foundation.
The national honour bestowed on Gates recognizes his philanthropic contributions and ongoing partnership with Nigeria in addressing critical health and development challenges facing the nation.
