The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar, has urged the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to intensify its dialogue with stakeholders to bolster asset recovery efforts and strengthen the fight against corruption in Nigeria.

The Sultan made this call during a visit by the ICPC Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner for Sokoto and Kebbi states, Mr. Shintema Binga, to his palace in Sokoto on Monday.

Emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to combating corruption, the Sultan stressed that the anti-corruption struggle requires support at all levels of society. He assured the commission of continued backing from traditional rulers in reducing corruption in all its forms.

"Anti-corruption agencies must succeed. We are ready to support them at every level," the Sultan stated. He revealed that the Sultanate councils have reprinted books authored by Sheikh Usman Danfodio and his disciples on corruption, noting that "such books will surely augment the struggle against corruption activities which have impacted our society."

The Sultan also cautioned anti-corruption agencies against activities that could undermine their mission, emphasizing the importance of honesty and sincerity in their operations. He assured that traditional rulers would stand with them in their efforts to combat corruption.

ICPC's Commitment to Good Governance

In his remarks, ICPC Commissioner Binga highlighted that the agency's war against corruption is essential for good governance and national development. He acknowledged the Sultan's consistent support for anti-corruption initiatives and his leadership role among traditional rulers in the fight against graft.

"The impact of corruption is manifested in underdevelopment and poverty, which makes the prospect of investment unappealing," Binga stated. He added that "Allah has bestowed the nation with human and material resources, capable of delivering prosperity and comfort for citizens."

The commissioner reported that the ICPC has been actively sensitizing Nigerians about the negative effects of corruption. He noted that the commission has successfully prosecuted cases, secured convictions, and recovered misappropriated funds and goods.

Binga appealed for continued support and collaboration aimed at projecting a positive image of Nigeria to encourage both domestic and foreign investment while promoting national development.
