Former Manchester United midfielder Gordon Strachan has claimed that the Red Devils missed a significant opportunity by not signing striker Liam Delap, who is now poised to join Chelsea from Ipswich Town.
Strachan's comments come after Manchester United completed the signing of Matheus Cunha from Premier League side Wolves over the weekend, suggesting Delap could have formed an effective partnership with the new arrival.
"I think Liam Delap would have been a brilliant signing for [Manchester] United if he hadn't chosen Chelsea," Strachan told Esports Insider. "He is young, hungry, has no baggage coming from Ipswich, is a great finisher and defenders don't like coming up against him."
The former Scotland manager emphasized the potential attacking combination that could have been formed at Old Trafford, adding: "Cunha and Delap would have been a nice, fresh combo."
Delap, who has impressed with his performances at Ipswich Town, has reportedly agreed to join Chelsea in the current transfer window, with the deal expected to be finalized soon.
The young striker has built a reputation for his clinical finishing and physical presence that makes him difficult for defenders to handle - qualities that Strachan believes would have benefited Manchester United's attacking options.
Manchester United continue their summer transfer activities under their current management, with Cunha's signing representing their first major acquisition of the window as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.
