The Bauchi State Government has implemented a ban on all farming and grazing activities within the premises of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport (SATBIA) as part of comprehensive measures to enhance security at the facility.
This decision was announced during a security and stakeholders' meeting at the airport by Engineer Mohammad Hamisu Garba, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Housing, who explained that the directive aligns with Governor Bala Mohammed's instructions to strengthen the airport's security architecture and prevent security breaches.
"The governor has directed us to take all necessary measures to secure this critical infrastructure," Hamisu stated, highlighting that the ban is part of a broader security strategy for the facility.
As part of the security enhancement initiative, seven surveillance personnel have been deployed from surrounding communities to collaborate with airport authorities. These personnel will be responsible for monitoring activities around the airport, reporting suspicious behavior, and preventing vandalism.
Recent Security Concerns
SATBIA General Manager, Surveyor Babagana Muhammad Tata, revealed during the meeting that the airport had recently experienced acts of sabotage, necessitating a complete overhaul of its security strategy. He appealed to communities surrounding the airport to take ownership of the facility and assist in its protection.
"The airport belongs to all of us, and its security is our collective responsibility," Tata emphasized.
The Permanent Secretary also cited the recent successful airlift of 2025 pilgrims to Saudi Arabia from the airport as evidence of its operational readiness despite security challenges.
Traditional leaders have been urged to support the government's efforts by raising awareness among their subjects and mobilizing local backing to protect the airport infrastructure from vandalism and unauthorized access.
The ban comes amid growing concerns about insecurity in various parts of Nigeria, with several states implementing similar measures to protect critical infrastructure and public facilities.
