The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued an official explanation following widespread outcry over students writing their English Language WASSCE examination late into Wednesday night across several Nigerian states.
Reports emerged from Oyo, Ogun, Benue, Osun, and other states of candidates being forced to write their English Language paper in darkness due to the late arrival of examination materials. In some locations, students were reportedly writing exams as late as 11:45 pm under torchlight.
In a statement released by WAEC spokesperson Moyosola Adeshina, the examination body attributed the delay to "deliberate security and logistical measures" implemented to prevent examination material leakage and protect the credibility of the test.
"The West African Examinations Council appreciates the understanding and support of all stakeholders during this period. We remain committed to upholding the highest standard in the conduct of examinations and shall continue to promote academic excellence," the statement read.
While WAEC maintained that it ultimately achieved its objective of preserving the examination's integrity, the body acknowledged that certain challenges affected the smooth and timely delivery of materials.
The council extended its apologies to affected stakeholders, stating: "We recognise the importance of timely conduct of examinations and the impact of this decision on the candidates, their schools and parents, and we sincerely apologise for any inconveniences caused."
The incident has sparked reactions from parents and educational stakeholders across the affected states. In Lagos, students were reportedly writing their exams under torchlight at 11:45 pm, while similar situations were reported in Taraba State.
This development comes amid ongoing discussions about examination standards and infrastructure challenges in Nigeria's education sector. The Nigerian government recently announced plans to maintain computer-based testing for WAEC and NECO examinations despite various implementation challenges.
