Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones has urged his former club to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to support incoming manager Ruben Amorim's plans at Old Trafford.
Jones, speaking to OLBG as reported by Metro, praised the Argentina international's abilities and experience, suggesting he would be an excellent addition to the Manchester United squad.
"I like him. I think he is a very good goalkeeper. I look at David De Gea, who Manchester United let go, he won us so many games," Jones said. "I think Emi Martinez, if he came in, would be a top signing. No, there's no getting away from that, but it depends on whether you go for experience over a bit more youth who can develop and nurture."
The former United defender also addressed the current goalkeeping situation at the club, acknowledging that any move for Martinez would depend on the club's plans for current first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana.
"Depends if they stick with Andre Onana, if they want to stick with him, but he [Martinez] would be a good signing for sure if they brought him in," Jones added.
Martinez, 32, who previously played for Arsenal before joining Aston Villa, has reportedly attracted interest from several clubs, including teams from the Saudi Pro League. The World Cup-winning goalkeeper has established himself as one of the Premier League's top shot-stoppers during his time at Villa Park.
This recommendation comes as Manchester United prepares for potential squad changes under Amorim, who has already indicated plans to reshape the team for the upcoming season.
