Chelsea legend John Terry has stated that his former club is still "a couple of years off" from mounting a serious challenge for the Premier League title, despite their fourth-place finish in the 2024/25 season.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Blues captain specifically identified Liverpool and Manchester City as teams currently ahead of Chelsea in terms of squad strength and title credentials.

"I think we [Chelsea] are a couple of years off [from winning the Premier League title]," Terry said. "If I am honest, I really do. I don't want that to be headline stuff, but when I look at Man City, Liverpool, I think they are stronger than us at the moment."

The Englishman also acknowledged Arsenal's consistency in recent seasons, suggesting they would further strengthen their squad in the transfer market. "Arsenal have been really consistent as well, and I am sure they are going to go out and buy players as well," he added.

Champions League Qualification Key to Future Success

Terry emphasized the importance of Chelsea securing Champions League football for the upcoming season, viewing it as crucial for attracting experienced talent to Enzo Maresca's squad.

"So this is why securing Champions League Football next year is big for us, because getting those extra players in that have maybe got a bit of experience," Terry explained.

Chelsea finished fourth in the Premier League table for the 2024/25 season under manager Enzo Maresca, securing a return to Europe's elite competition after missing out in previous campaigns.

The Blues have also enjoyed recent success in continental competition, having defeated Real Betis 4-1 in the UEFA Conference League final, adding another trophy to their cabinet despite Terry's assessment of their Premier League standing.
