The Joint Action Front (JAF) has described President Bola Tinubu's two years in office as a "monumental disaster" for Nigerians, criticizing the administration's economic policies that have allegedly worsened living conditions across the country.
Speaking at a press conference held in Ibadan on Thursday to assess the administration's performance, JAF Oyo State Coordinator Comrade Ademola Aremu stated that rather than delivering on its "Renewed Hope Agenda," the government has implemented policies that have intensified economic hardship and deepened inequality.
"The removal of fuel subsidy announced unilaterally during the President's inaugural speech on May 29, 2023, triggered a dramatic surge in petrol prices. This, in turn, led to skyrocketing transportation costs, food inflation, housing crises, and soaring living expenses," Aremu said.
Economic Policies Under Fire
JAF highlighted three major policies they believe have negatively impacted Nigerians:
1. The fuel subsidy removal, which has caused a dramatic increase in petrol prices and subsequently raised the cost of living.
2. The floating of the naira, which has resulted in currency devaluation, high inflation, and diminished purchasing power for ordinary citizens.
3. The increasing commercialization of public services, particularly education and healthcare, making essential services inaccessible to many Nigerians.
According to JAF, these policies, allegedly designed to appease international financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank, have pushed millions of Nigerians deeper into poverty, unemployment, and social despair.
Calls for Policy Reversal
The organization demanded immediate action from the government, including:
- Reversal of petroleum product prices and implementation of transparent, democratic control of the sector
- Provision of free, quality, and publicly funded education, healthcare, and other essential services
- An immediate halt to the commercialization and privatization of social services
The press conference coincided with President Tinubu's second anniversary in office on Thursday, May 29, 2025.
JAF's criticism joins a growing chorus of dissatisfaction with the administration's economic policies, as various groups continue to express concerns about the direction of the country under Tinubu's leadership.
