Former Manchester United icon Gary Neville has urged new manager Ruben Amorim to "get a grip" of the club by following Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta's example of establishing firm control from the outset.
Neville's comments come after Manchester United's disastrous season, which saw them finish 15th in the Premier League table and lose to Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League final.
"Someone's got to get a grip of that club, and I think it has to be the manager," Neville said on Sky Sports. "Ruben, you've got to get a grip of that club. Mikel Arteta's done a great job at Arsenal. He put the coaching systems in place..."
The former United defender suggested that Amorim needs to take decisive action by signing his own type of players while allowing many current squad members to leave - similar to the approach Arteta implemented when he took charge at Arsenal.
Following Manchester United's 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, Amorim offered reassurance to supporters, promising that "better days are coming" for the club.
The Portuguese manager, who joined Manchester United from Sporting CP, faces a significant rebuilding task after one of the most disappointing seasons in the club's recent history.
Arteta's transformation of Arsenal has become a blueprint for struggling Premier League giants, with the Spaniard having turned the Gunners into title contenders after implementing his vision and philosophy throughout the club.
