Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has confirmed he held "serious" negotiations with Saudi Pro League officials before ultimately extending his stay at Anfield.

The Egyptian forward, who recently helped Liverpool lift the Premier League trophy, made the revelation during an interview with On Sport Egyptian TV channel on Sunday.

"It was a good opportunity for me," Salah admitted when asked about his discussions with Saudi football authorities. "If I hadn't renewed with Liverpool it would have happened."

The 32-year-old added: "My relations with SPL officials are very good, we talked a lot, and the negotiations were serious."

Speculation about Salah's future had been rampant in recent months as his previous contract entered its final stages. In November, the forward had suggested he was "more out than in" regarding his Anfield future, fueling rumors of a potential departure.

However, after protracted negotiations, Salah eventually committed his future to Liverpool by signing a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2027.

Speaking about the contract renewal process, Salah explained: "The negotiations were long, I know the club's policy [in negotiations], we reached a middle ground that made us all happy."

The Saudi Pro League has attracted numerous high-profile players in recent years as part of the kingdom's ambitious sports investment strategy. Salah's confirmation of serious talks suggests he was a prime target for Saudi officials looking to further enhance the league's global appeal.

Salah has been a pivotal figure for Liverpool since joining from Roma in 2017, helping the club secure both Premier League and Champions League titles during his tenure.
