Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has advised Jack Grealish to consider leaving Manchester City and returning to Aston Villa during the summer transfer window to revitalize his career.

Scholes made these comments after Grealish was notably absent from Manchester City's squad for their final Premier League match of the season against Fulham on Sunday, which City won 2-0.

"He [Grealish] needs to get away and re-energise his career. We all know what a good footballer he can be, but for the last couple of years, it's been up and down," Scholes told TNT Sports.

The England international has struggled to secure regular playing time under manager Pep Guardiola, with his situation seemingly worsening as the season progressed.

Scholes highlighted a particularly difficult moment for Grealish, stating: "Watching the young lad [Echeverri] coming on in the final ahead of him would have been a real kick in the teeth for Grealish, that would've hurt him."

The Manchester United legend believes a separation would benefit both parties. "I think it is best for both parties [Man City and Grealish] for him to leave the club. Why should he not consider going back to Aston Villa?" Scholes added.

Scholes is not alone in his assessment of Grealish's situation. Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer had previously urged the midfielder to leave City this summer in search of more playing opportunities.

Grealish joined Manchester City from Aston Villa in August 2021 for a then-British record transfer fee of £100 million. Despite being part of City's trophy-laden campaigns under Guardiola, the 28-year-old has found it increasingly difficult to cement a regular starting position in the team.

A return to Villa Park could potentially offer Grealish the platform to showcase the talents that earned him the big-money move to the Etihad Stadium in the first place, while also helping him regain his place in the England national team setup.
