Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has delivered an encouraging update on Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi's recovery from a serious abdominal injury that required surgery.

The 27-year-old Nigerian international sustained the injury during Forest's 2-2 home draw against Leicester City after an unfortunate collision with a goalpost. The incident was severe enough to require surgical intervention, ruling Awoniyi out for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.

Speaking ahead of Nottingham Forest's crucial upcoming fixture against Chelsea on Sunday, Nuno provided reassuring news about Awoniyi's condition.

"He (Awoniyi) is much better. He is already able to walk. The doctors informed us that he had already started his normal life with his foot. So he is much better," the Portuguese manager stated.

This positive development will come as welcome news to Nigerian football fans who have been concerned about the striker's wellbeing since the incident.

Awoniyi has endured a challenging season at the City Ground, with injuries significantly limiting his playing time. His position in the team has also been affected by the impressive form of teammate Chris Wood, who has moved ahead of him in the pecking order.

While Awoniyi continues his recovery, Nottingham Forest face a critical match against Chelsea as they battle to secure their Premier League status for another season. The fixture represents one of the final opportunities for Nuno's side to gather crucial points before the season concludes.

Forest supporters will be hoping that Awoniyi can make a full recovery during the off-season and return to full fitness in time for the 2025/26 campaign.
