The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has escalated its fight against drug trafficking in northern Nigeria by filing an eight-count charge against Sulaiman Danwawu, a 37-year-old suspected drug kingpin, at the Federal High Court in Kano.

Danwawu, who was initially apprehended on May 10 by the Kano State Police Command along with other suspects, was subsequently transferred to the NDLEA for comprehensive investigation and prosecution.

According to court documents, Danwawu faces serious allegations of illegal possession of various controlled substances including Tramadol, Rohypnol, Cannabis Sativa, Pregabalin, and Codeine-laced cough syrup. These substances are classified as narcotics under Nigerian law.

The alleged offenses took place in Cairo Street, Tudun Yola area of Gwale Local Government, Kano State, on multiple occasions throughout May 2025.

The NDLEA has emphasized that Danwawu had no lawful authority to possess these substances, putting him in direct contravention of Section 19 of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

If found guilty, Danwawu could face severe penalties under Nigeria's stringent anti-narcotics laws. This case represents part of a broader intensification of efforts by Nigerian authorities to combat drug-related crimes across the northern region.

The prosecution of Danwawu comes amid growing concerns about drug abuse and trafficking in Kano State, which has seen increased law enforcement operations targeting suspected dealers and distribution networks in recent months.

The NDLEA continues to strengthen its operations nationwide as part of the federal government's commitment to addressing the proliferation of illegal drugs and their devastating impact on Nigerian communities.
