A civic group based in North-West Nigeria, the Coalition for Good Governance and Accountability in the North-West (COGGAN), has formally called for the resignation of Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, citing his administration's failure to fulfill campaign promises, particularly regarding security challenges plaguing the state.

In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by COGGAN's president, Alhaji Ibrahim Anka, the group expressed disappointment with Governor Lawal's performance since assuming office in 2023, stating that his administration "has not met expectations" in addressing critical issues facing Zamfara residents.

The coalition specifically highlighted the governor's unfulfilled campaign pledge to end banditry within his first three months in office. According to COGGAN, more than a year into Lawal's tenure, insecurity remains widespread across many parts of the state, with continued attacks on communities severely disrupting farming activities, rural markets, and education.

"The situation has left many residents vulnerable and unable to carry out their daily lives safely," the statement noted, underscoring the deteriorating security conditions that continue to affect the livelihood of Zamfara residents.

Beyond security concerns, COGGAN also criticized the Lawal administration for making limited progress in addressing key challenges in the education sector. The group pointed out that Zamfara continues to face "poor access to quality basic education" and called for stronger efforts to improve school infrastructure and learning conditions throughout the state.

The coalition further urged the state government to enhance transparency and accountability in managing public funds, including federal allocations and special intervention funds. COGGAN emphasized the importance of clear communication regarding how government resources are being utilized for development projects.

Concluding its statement, the group reiterated its call for Governor Lawal's resignation, insisting that "the people of Zamfara deserve leadership that prioritises their safety, education, and welfare."

As of the time of this report, the Zamfara State government has not issued an official response to COGGAN's demands.
