Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has threatened to quit the club if they don't meet his demands for a smaller squad size ahead of next season.

The Spanish tactician made his position clear following City's 3-1 victory over Bournemouth on Tuesday, a win that kept their hopes alive for securing a third-place finish in the Premier League.

"I told the club I don't want a big squad. I don't want to put five, six players in the tribune, I don't want that. I will quit," Guardiola stated firmly in his post-match press conference.

The former Barcelona manager emphasized that his conscience wouldn't allow him to keep players who don't get playing opportunities. "If they don't make a short squad, I will not stay. It's impossible for my soul to put players in the tribune and cannot play," he added.

This ultimatum comes during what has been a challenging season for the Cityzens. The club recently suffered defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final, meaning they are set to end the season without a major trophy for the first time in several years under Guardiola's management.

Manchester City's Premier League campaign has also been below their usual standards. They currently sit on 68 points, two ahead of Newcastle, Chelsea, and Aston Villa, with all clubs battling for Champions League qualification spots.

City's final league position will be determined on Sunday's season finale when they face Fulham. A win would guarantee them third place, while their superior goal difference means even a draw might be sufficient.

Guardiola's comments signal potential significant changes to Manchester City's squad management approach for the upcoming season, as the club looks to rebuild after a disappointing campaign by their lofty standards.
