Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili has etched her name in athletics history by breaking the women's 150m world record at the Adidas Atlanta City Games held on Saturday.
The 22-year-old Port Harcourt-born athlete became the first woman ever to run 150m in 16 seconds, shattering the previous record of 16.23 seconds set by Shaunae Miller-Uibo in 2018.
In her post-race interview, an elated Ofili attributed her success to divine intervention and hard work. "The Lord is good and is marvellous in my sight. I am surprised with the time. But I know I put in the work, I trust my coach, I trust his program, and I know at the right time the Lord would do it," she stated.
This remarkable achievement adds to Ofili's growing list of accomplishments. In 2023, she set an African record in the 200m event with a time of 22.36 seconds at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The new world record firmly establishes Ofili on the global athletics stage, representing a significant milestone for Nigerian sports. Her achievement comes as Nigerian athletics continues to gain international recognition, with athletes like Ofili showcasing the country's sporting talent on world platforms.
Sports analysts suggest this record-breaking performance positions Ofili as a strong contender in upcoming international competitions, including potential Olympic events, further elevating Nigeria's status in global athletics.
