Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has confirmed that Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi remains hospitalized but is recovering after being placed in an induced coma following urgent abdominal surgery.

The Super Eagles forward suffered a ruptured intestine after colliding with the goalpost during Nottingham Forest's 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Sunday. Despite the serious nature of the injury, Awoniyi attempted to continue playing while visibly in pain before medical staff intervened.

"He is on observation now. He is recovering," Santo told reporters during Friday's press conference. "We still have to wait for the doctors to allow visits. His family are there. We are concerned but we are positive."

The severity of Awoniyi's condition became apparent only after further medical examinations by Forest's medical team, leading to his hospital admission on Monday evening where emergency surgery was performed.

"The concern of the injury that he had, the situation that he went through. It has been hard on us," the Portuguese manager added, highlighting the emotional impact the incident has had on the squad.

This injury represents another setback for the 27-year-old Nigerian international, who has previously struggled with fitness issues during his time at the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest currently sit in the middle of the Premier League table as they prepare for their remaining fixtures of the season. The club has not yet provided a timeline for Awoniyi's potential return to action.
