Senate Minority Leader and Senator representing Benue South Senatorial District, Comrade Abba Moro, has raised serious concerns before the Nigerian Senate regarding continued attacks by suspected herdsmen on communities in his constituency.

During Thursday's session, Senator Moro moved a motion highlighting the brutal killings and destruction of properties worth millions of naira in recent attacks on Akpete and Ojantele communities in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State.

The motion, titled "Herdsmen Attacks on Akpete/Ojantele Communities of Apa Local Government Area of Benue South Senatorial District: Urgent Need for Senate's Intervention," detailed attacks that occurred on May 1 and May 7, 2025, resulting in the deaths of at least 13 people going about their normal business.

"This is yet another in a series of attacks and kidnappings carried out by herdsmen across communities in Benue South, resulting in the loss of lives and destruction of property," Moro stated in his presentation, expressing further concern that none of the perpetrators have been apprehended to date.

Senate Resolutions

Following Senator Moro's motion, the Senate passed several resolutions aimed at addressing the security situation in Benue South. These include:

1. Urging the Nigeria Police and other relevant security agencies to conduct comprehensive investigations into the attacks with the goal of arresting and prosecuting those responsible.

2. Calling on the Federal Government to implement comprehensive surveillance in the affected areas to prevent future attacks.

3. Directing security agencies to review their operational strategies to become more proactive and effective in preventing such incidents.

4. Requesting the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately provide relief materials to those displaced by the attacks in Ojantele and Akpete communities.

The Senate also observed a one-minute silence in honor of the victims of both the recent and previous attacks in the region.

This motion comes amid growing concerns about the security situation in Benue State, which has experienced recurring conflicts between farming communities and herders over the years, resulting in significant loss of life and displacement of residents.
