The leadership of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has announced plans to shut down markets, schools, banks, and other public facilities across the Southeast region on May 30, 2025, as part of activities marking the 2025 Biafra Anniversary celebration.

In a statement issued on Monday by MASSOB's National Director of Information, Edeson Samuel, the group revealed that the celebration will feature a "sit-at-home exercise in Biafra land" from 6 am to 4 pm.

"All markets, public/private motor parks, schools, banks, and other public business premises shall remain closed from 6 am to 4 pm on 30th May, 2025," the statement read.

According to MASSOB, led by Comrade Uchenna Madu, the 2025 celebration marks the 58th anniversary of the Biafra declaration by General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

The group described the exercise as "a mark of honour, respect, and patriotism to our fatherland," emphasizing that it serves as a means of appreciating "the numerous sacrifices and prices our fathers, mothers, brothers, and sisters rendered for Biafra during the 3-year war of genocide against Biafra by the British-backed Nigeria."

MASSOB further clarified that participation in the closure of public places "is voluntary, not by force," describing it as "a mark of respect and love for our fatherland."

The announcement comes as pro-Biafra sentiments continue to resonate in parts of the Southeast region, with various groups advocating for different approaches to the Biafra cause.

Residents of the Southeast are advised to take note of this announcement as the date approaches, while security agencies are expected to maintain peace and order during the period.
