The Lagos State Police Command has issued an official statement addressing public concerns over a viral video showing a large gathering of young men from northern Nigeria in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.
According to Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the approximately 89 young men captured in the footage that sparked security concerns across social media platforms were legitimately recruited laborers from Katsina State hired to work at the Dangote Refinery.
"The viral video showing northern men gathered in front of Dano Company premises in Ibeju-Lekki has been investigated," Hundeyin stated. "Our findings confirm these individuals were brought to Lagos for legitimate employment purposes at the Dangote Refinery."
The police spokesperson revealed that a contractor working with the refinery had personally sourced and transported the laborers from Katsina to Lagos. This information was corroborated by the Chief Security Officer of the refinery, who confirmed that all the men had been properly verified and cleared to enter the facility, where they would also be accommodated.
As part of standard security protocols, the police conducted thorough searches of the individuals and found no incriminating items in their possession. Additionally, each person provided proper identification, including National Identification Numbers (NINs), which were verified.
The clarification comes amid heightened security awareness in Lagos State, with residents increasingly vigilant about unusual gatherings, particularly following various security challenges across the country.
The Lagos Police Command has assured the public that the situation was thoroughly investigated and poses no security threat to residents of the state.
