The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a new national policy on employment generation aimed at tackling Nigeria's unemployment crisis and reducing poverty across the country.
Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, disclosed this on Monday following the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to Dingyadi, the new policy will introduce fresh strategies to address unemployment challenges, reduce poverty, and highlight economic opportunities for productive employment of Nigerians.
"This memo has to do with, we have been able to get approval, to implement it, reduce it, then to send it to our stakeholders," the minister stated, emphasizing the importance of the policy to the labour sector.
The minister explained that the ministry initiated the review of the national policy on employment due to the long span of time since the previous policy and changing realities on the ground. The review aims to develop new strategies that will effectively address the challenges of unemployment and create economic opportunities for Nigerians.
Dingyadi also revealed that Nigeria will be showcasing this achievement at the upcoming International Labour Organization meeting in Geneva within the next two to three weeks.
"We will be very proud to tell our colleagues in other parts of the world that we have been able to review the national employment policy," he added.
The approval of this policy comes at a critical time when Nigeria continues to grapple with high unemployment rates and economic challenges affecting millions of citizens across the country.
Details of the specific strategies and implementation timeline for the new employment policy are expected to be released in the coming weeks as the ministry engages with relevant stakeholders.
