Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has warned that midfielder Declan Rice could begin exploring options away from Arsenal should the club endure another trophyless season.

Rice, who joined the Gunners from West Ham United in a club-record £100 million transfer two years ago, has made 101 appearances across all competitions but has yet to lift a major trophy with the North London club.

Speaking on his podcast 'Rio Ferdinand Presents', the former England international expressed his concerns about Rice's future at Arsenal if their trophy drought persists.

"I think Declan is a bit of a throwback. There is a difference to him," Ferdinand said. "He would want to get the job done before he thought about going anywhere. I think he would be that type. I could be wrong but from knowing Declan, I think that is where he would sit."

However, Ferdinand added a cautionary note: "If he goes another season without winning then maybe he might start looking."

The 26-year-old England midfielder's move to Arsenal was motivated by ambition rather than financial gain, according to Ferdinand.

"Declan has not gone to Arsenal for money or fame. He has gone there to try and improve himself and win," Ferdinand explained. "If you are not doing that, I could see him maybe getting itchy feet at least, but I think it's too early to say."

Rice has been a standout performer for Arsenal since his arrival, but the club's inability to secure silverware could potentially influence his long-term commitment to the Gunners' project under manager Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal fans will be hoping the club can end their trophy drought in the upcoming season to ensure they retain the services of their £100 million midfielder for the foreseeable future.
