Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has claimed that manager Ruben Amorim is looking to overhaul the squad by removing up to 50 percent of the current players following the team's continued poor performances in the Premier League.
The Red Devils suffered another setback on Sunday with a 2-0 home defeat to West Ham, leaving them in 16th position in the Premier League table. Under Amorim's leadership, United have managed just six victories in 25 league matches, with their last win coming against relegated Leicester City on March 16.
Speaking on his show 'Rio Presents', Ferdinand suggested that Amorim is frustrated with the current squad composition and believes many players are unsuitable for his tactical approach.
"I think he looks around the dressing room and thinks 'If I could wave a magic wand, in the next five years at least 50 percent of this team wouldn't be here'," Ferdinand said. "Because they're not good enough and they're not right for the way he wants to play."
Ferdinand also indicated that Amorim would need at least two transfer windows to build a squad capable of implementing his vision for the club. The comments come as Manchester United continue to struggle this season, raising questions about the future of several first-team players.
Amorim, who joined Manchester United with a reputation for tactical innovation, has faced significant challenges in adapting his style to the Premier League. The Portuguese manager's difficulties highlight the ongoing rebuilding process at Old Trafford as the club seeks to return to its former glory.
