A 52-year-old man, Lucky Segun, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Iyaganku Magistrates' Court in Ibadan for allegedly failing to produce a fraud suspect for whom he stood as surety.
Segun faces charges of contempt of court and accessory after the fact but pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him.
According to the prosecution led by Inspector Femi Omilana, the offences occurred on March 7, 2025, at the Command Monitoring Unit in Eleyele, Ibadan.
The prosecutor told the court that Segun had stood as surety for one Abayomi Badejo, who is under investigation for allegedly obtaining money under false pretences and theft. However, Segun failed to produce Badejo when required by authorities.
Omilana further alleged that Segun knowingly assisted Badejo in evading arrest, thereby making himself an accessory after the fact.
The charges violate Sections 126 and 519 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
Presiding Magistrate Adebola Adeola granted Segun bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in the same amount. The case has been adjourned until June 13 for hearing.
This case highlights the legal responsibilities that come with standing as a surety in criminal proceedings, as Nigerian law holds sureties accountable for ensuring suspects appear in court when required.
